Traffic Control Constable Unit
The Ashland Police Department maintains a Traffic Control Constable Unit to supplement full-time staff and ensure adequate personnel are available to manage traffic flow during road construction projects and other operations requiring dedicated traffic direction. Traffic Control Constables are not sworn police officers and possess no law enforcement authority; their sole responsibility is the safe and effective direction of vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
Constables receive specialized training to perform their duties safely and professionally. This training includes CPR and First Responder certification as well as Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) Flagger Certification, ensuring they meet state standards for roadway safety and traffic management.
It is the policy of the Ashland Police Department to staff the Traffic Control Constable Unit with trained, reliable, and responsible personnel—both employees and qualified community members—to support the town’s traffic control needs and enhance public safety during construction and roadway operations.
